R1938

Built by American Car & Foundry in 1912 for the Alabama & Vicksburg Railroad. The Illinois Central later acquired the car, renumbered it several times, finally to 3 in 1940. The car was originally built as a wooden car. In 1938 it was rebuilt by the ICRR Burnside Shops as a steel car with air conditioning. Assigned to J. A. Welsch,  L H Schierbecker, A. G. Kahn and the mechanical department in 1950's and 60's. This car was sold by the IC/ICG sometime in the early 1970s and was used as an office for the Governor's Gateway Industrial Park near Chicago. The car was painted up and lettered for the industrial park. In 1975, a fellow who was with the CO&E purchased this car for use as his private residence. The car survives today as Crab Orchard & Egyptian #3 at 512 North Van Bruen Street in Marion, IL (next to the CO&E locomotive terminal as the private residence of William E. Schrieber VP/Treasurer of the CO&E (retired). Listed for sale July 2005
